Our Technology

Although the most important assessment your pet can receive to determine his or her health is a complete physical examination by one of our veterinarians, we have invested in the highest quality diagnostic equipment available to aid us in analyzing your pet’s total health.  We currently offer:

Digital X-ray

Digital Radiographs (X-rays)– a noninvasive and nonpainful way to look at the body’s bones and organs  to assist in the immediate diagnosis of common illnesses and injuries. This technology provides much more detail than a traditional film X-ray system, is much faster, and reduces the amount of radiation your pet is exposed to.

Diagnostic Laboratory – using our equipment, we can run a large variety of tests in-house.  This helps us diagnose your pet quickly so that treatment can be prescribed and initiated before you leave your appointment. We also utilize a veterinary diagnostic laboratory who picks up samples twice daily for more comprehensive and advanced testing, with most results received next day.

These tests help tell us how the organs and systems in the body are functioning, and when done regularly, can help us catch disease early when we can make the biggest difference in your pet’s health.

Ultrasound (Sonogram) We have an ultrasound unit that was generously donated to our hospital by Dr. Brian Schillig of Academy Animal Hospital in Laurinburg, NC.

We can use this machine as another noninvasive, nonpainful way to take a look inside your pet’s abdomen and chest to look for bladder stones, tumors, and pregnancy. Most pets don’t even require a sedative for this procedure.  For a more comprehensive ultrasound of the abdomen or heart, the mobile, board certified ultrasonographers from ECVI can be scheduled to come to our hospital as well.

Advanced Monitoring Equipment

Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG) – we have an advanced  monitoring unit that will give us a picture of how your pet’s heart is functioning in real-time.   We recommend it for all pets over the age of seven years as well as all pets with a high risk of heart disease (certain breeds of dogs and cats).  This test is pain free and can be done without sedatives. We also use this equipment to monitor your pet’s heart during all surgical procedures.

Blood Pressure Monitoring (Sphygmomanometry) – we can also use our advanced monitoring unit (mentioned above) to measure your pet’s blood pressure quickly and non-painfully.  We recommend this for all aging dogs and cats as well as any pet with high risk for heart disease.  We monitor blood pressure during all surgical procedures in our hospital.

Pulse Oximetry (Pulse ox or SPO2) – this is another function of our advanced monitoring unit that we use to evaluate your pet’s heart and lung function.  It measures how much oxygen is carried by the hemoglobin in the blood.  It is a pain-free test that takes only seconds.  We also use the pulse oximetry during all surgical procedures.

Capnography (EtCO2) – this is yet another function of our advanced monitoring unit that we use to evaluate your pet’s lung function.  This measures how much carbon dioxide is present in your pet’s blood.  It is pain-free and takes only seconds.  We also use this during all surgical procedures in our hospital.

Ocular Tonometry (eye pressure) – this machine helps us quickly and painlessly monitor the pressure inside your pet’s eyes.  This helps us diagnose glaucoma, many other eye diseases, and some brain disease….and much, much more!
